Your Pet and Vaccines
A message from your veterinarian about distemper
Protecting your pets against serious diseases is our number one priority. Annual vaccines protect your pet against viral diseases which can be fatal and are a vital part of your pet’s wellness program. New research has shown that we can continue this level of protection with vaccines that last for three years. Dogs can now be vaccinated for canine distemper (DA2PP) and cats for feline distemper (FVRCP) every three years instead of annually. Anyone who has owned a pet with distemper knows how devastating these illnesses are.
How can you be sure your pets are protected?
First, your vet can run a blood test that measures your pet’s blood for the antibodies which fight these diseases. If these antibodies are present, then your pet is protected and does not need to be vaccinated.
It is important to check annually for these antibodies to ensure your pet is fully protected. Due to our wellness programs, the number of documented cases of these diseases has significantly declined over the years.
Continue to schedule annual examinations for your pet which include a physical exam, rabies vaccination, and heartworm and intestinal parasite testing. On your next visit, be sure to ask about all these important issues and if your pet would benefit from a three-year vaccine.
